3 things you need to know about visiting the Cotswolds in September
1. It’s quieter in the Cotswolds.
One of the best reasons to visit the Cotswolds in September is because most other people visit in the summer!
During the summer months of June, July and August, when many families take vacations during the school holidays, some parts of the Cotswolds can be heaving with visitors – especially the really popular towns like Bibury and Bourton-on-the-Water.
By the end of the first week of September, European children are back at school, so those visitors who don’t need to travel in school holidays can enjoy the Cotswolds with far fewer people around! We also tend to have better availability for our best-selling tours in September – sometimes even at the very last minute. So come and join us!
2. It’s beautiful in the Cotswolds in September!
September is that sweet spot where it’s not too hot, not too cold, and just right for exploring.
Expect golden sunshine one minute and sometimes a light drizzle —it’s England, after all! But don’t worry, a comfy jumper, a brolly, and maybe a cheeky pint in a pub garden will see you through.
Pro tip: Layers are your best friend. You’ll thank us when you’re basking in the sun at lunch but wrapping up for a chilly evening stroll.
3. Autumn Events and Local Life.
September is when the Cotswolds’ calendar starts shifting from summer festivals to cosy autumn traditions.
Think harvest celebrations, food festivals, and bustling farmers’ markets filled with seasonal produce. You’ll also notice locals settling back into routine after the busy summer, giving the villages a more authentic, everyday feel.
Tip: Check local “What’s On” guides before your trip—you may stumble across a quirky village fête or a delicious food or drink festival.
