Visiting the Cotswolds in March
What is it like to visit the Cotswolds in March?
If you’re planning to visit the UK, or the Cotswolds in March, read our blog post for some very useful information!
March is a great time to explore the Cotswolds. With the first signs of spring emerging, the countryside starts to come to life. You’ll see beautiful spring flowers emerging, some very cute baby animals, and there’s plenty to see and do without any of the peak-season crowds.
Here’s why you should consider visiting in March—and why booking a tour with Go Cotswolds is the best way to do it!
Go Cotswolds runs guided tours of the Cotswolds throughout March. We’re one of the only tour companies open at this time of year, and the ONLY local company to provide small group tours. We are also the best (Trip Advisor’s Travellers Choice 2024 and Best Tour Company in the Cotswolds at the Cotswolds Awards 2024)!
Why we love March in the Cotswolds
1. It’s still quiet but getting warmer!
One of the best reasons to visit the Cotswolds in March is because it’s still quiet.
Most other people choose more summery months, so in March it’s still quiet enough to get those fabulous pictures with only you in shot! You’ll have all those beautiful Cotswold villages more-or-less to yourself.
Wander the streets of Bibury alone (and get that all important Arlington Row picture!), pick up a bargain at a Stow-on-the-Wold store without getting into a queue, or admire the countryside at Dover’s Hill without another person spoiling the fabulous view.
The British weather starts to change at this time of year too. It’s definitely warmer than the winter months, with very little chance of snow and ice, so you won’t need to layer up like in the winter. When the spring sun comes out it can actually get quite warm – the perfect temperature to do some exploring!
We tend to have the best availability for our best-selling Cotswolds in a Day and Secret Cotswolds tours in the off-peak season. So come and join us this March!
2. Spring has started in the Cotswolds
March marks the start of spring in the Cotswolds. Daffodils, primroses, and crocuses begin to bloom, trees start budding, and the rolling countryside looks greener by the day.
With average highs of around 11°C, it’s usually very comfortable for walking and exploring, and you may even get to spot a lamb or two in the fields!
3. Cheltenham Festival – 11th-14th March 2025
One of the biggest events in the region, the Cheltenham Festival, takes place in March. This world-famous horse racing event draws visitors from all over the world and creates an exciting buzz in the area. Whether you’re a racing fan or just enjoy a lively atmosphere, it’s a great time to visit.
Be very aware though: accommodation will be very hard to come by in the Cotswolds during this week! Most hotels and Airbnbs will be booked up years in advance. Many private drivers and taxi companies also get booked up with festival transport, so it can present a challenge to get around.
If horse racing isn’t your thing, or if you’re visiting for the Festival but have a free day in your schedule, you can book a tour with Go Cotswolds during this week! You’ll enjoy an amazing, stress-free look around the Cotswolds away from the Cheltenham crowds.
